Graphic Design Program And Interaction Design Program Instructor

The Design Technology Department at Santa Monica College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty member for the Graphic Design Associate of Science (A.S.) degree program as well as the Interaction Design Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program.

Duties: The primary responsibilities for this position include teaching beginning, intermediate and advanced courses in areas including, but not limited to, graphic design, typography, web design, mobile design, user experience design, and interaction design. Faculty members will actively participate in the continuing development and assessment of program curriculum; maintain professional currency; engage with industry including program advisory boards; and employ instructional methods and technologies designed to enhance the success and persistence of all students, especially those in historically underrepresented and underserved populations. In addition, this position will help to maintain and improve the online presence of the Design Technology Department and its programs. Participation in departmental program review, student advisement, faculty organizations and college governance is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, New Media, Design, or related design or media field; plus 2 years professional experience in UX/Interaction design, and two years teaching experience in UX/Interaction design, or in a field reasonably related to the discipline of the assignment; Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the college student population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.

Preferred Qualifications

The Design Technology Department is committed to improving equity and diversity in design fields by more effectively engaging and supporting underrepresented students. Ideal candidates will have recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and a willingness to use culturally responsive instructional practices.

Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity, and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation;

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of professional experience in user experience design and interaction design as well as two or more years of teaching experience in UX/IxD, or a field reasonably related to the discipline of the assignment; a thorough knowledge of industry standard prototyping and project management methods and tools for UX and IxD; proficiency with the Adobe Creative Cloud, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript; and an extensive and varied design portfolio.

Knowledge of motion design, product design, service design, design thinking, “The Internet of Things”, human-computer interaction (HCI), and/or tangible interaction is desirable.
